Keyboards built to be kept.
Metamech makes ergonomic mechanical keyboards for people who type all day. Our first one is in development, and its designs will be open.
What we make
Metamech makes ergonomic mechanical keyboards and the things that go with them.
Our first keyboard is wireless. It connects over Bluetooth to a Mac, iPad or iPhone with no dongle, and it also works over a USB-C cable.
It is a one-piece split. The two halves are angled apart on a single board, so your hands sit at shoulder width with nothing to set up or cable together. It uses low-profile switches, so it sits lower on the desk.
Why it's different
Wireless, in one piece
Bluetooth to a Mac, iPad or iPhone, with no dongle. One board means one battery, one radio and one thing to put in a bag.
Mac-first
Control, Option and Command on both hands, and a Globe key. The companion app for configuring it is a native Mac app.
Open all the way down
We will publish the firmware, configurator, keymap format, protocol and the case CAD under open licences. Most keyboard makers stop at the firmware.
Built to outlive us
Your layouts live in a documented file you can open in a text editor. The configurator runs offline. Recovery works over USB, so a bad update never strands the keyboard.
Independent
One person, in Corvallis, Oregon. No investors and no deadline set by anyone else.
Follow along
We are building the first keyboard in the open. The blog covers the decisions as we make them, including the ones we get wrong. The newsletter arrives about once a month: a prototype, a test result, a change of plan.
