About Metamech
Ergonomic mechanical keyboards and keyboard accessories, designed in the open.
Our Story
Metamech LLC is one person in Corvallis, Oregon.
We started out making Mac software. Those apps now have their own home at Steady Newt, and Metamech makes hardware: ergonomic mechanical keyboards and keyboard accessories.
The first keyboard came out of a simple want: a wireless split keyboard that connects over Bluetooth with no dongle, feels at home on a Mac, sits low on the desk, and keeps working long after the company that made it. We could not find one, so we are building it.
We design in the open. We will publish the firmware, the configurator and the case files under open licences, and we write up decisions on the blog as we make them.
We take no outside investment. The business has to pay for itself by making things people want to keep.
What We Do
Make keyboards worth keeping, and tell you how they work.
Craft
We build prototypes, test them in our hands, and ship when the thing is right. A deadline does not decide when a keyboard is finished.
Open by Default
We will publish the firmware, protocol, keymap format and case CAD under open licences. Only the name and logo are kept.
Fair Dealing
We tell you what is decided and what is not. When there are prices, they will be clear and published up front.
What We Believe
Built to Last
Your layouts live in an open file format. The configurator runs offline. Recovery works over USB. The keyboard should outlive our involvement.
Privacy
Configuring your keyboard needs no account and no cloud service. Your keymap stays on your keyboard and your computer.
Independent
No venture capital and no growth targets. A small company that intends to be around.
